AMCo to sponsor PhD Scholarship in Ophthalmology at University of Manchester, Faculty of Life Sciences
AMCo is sponsoring a PhD scholarship in Ophthalmology at Manchester University, Faculty of Life Sciences. Ophthalmology is a therapeutic area of particular interest and expertise for the company. Its medicines include Fucithalmic®, an international product containing Fusidic acid as an ophthalmic gel for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.
The sponsorship will fund a project looking at the presence of microbes at the corneal surface which may trigger low grade discomfort through to acute eye infection and a potential permanent loss of vision. Understanding how this happens may uncover new targets for pharmaceutical intervention. The project will build a corneal system which will be exposed to bacterial toxins. The model would ultimately be useful in screening candidate therapies to treat infections.
CEO John Beighton said: "The University of Manchester's facility has a well deserved reputation for the high calibre of their research at this centre of research excellence. We are confident that this work will result in some robust and valuable findings."
The sponsorship is worth £104,000 over four years and will start in January in 2016.
